“Okay,” Noah replies. “Bye, Nate!” he says as he waves to him.

“Bye!” Nate waves back as Mom and Noah walk away. Then he turns to me. “This was fun. I’m glad we got to hang out for a while. Can I take you out tonight?”

His question takes me by surprise. “You want to take me out? Like on a … date?”

He nods. “Yeah. What time can I pick you up?”

“Oh.” My personal policy of no dating flashes in my mind, but Nate’s handsome face and adorably crooked smile are all too alluring. How can I say no? I’m attracted to him in a way I’ve never felt attraction toward another man. He’s fun to be around. We had a good time this afternoon, not to mention all the times we’ve talked at the bar.

Nate cocks an eyebrow. “Is that a yes?” he asks with hope in his voice.

Taking a deep breath, I decide to follow my instincts. “Yes. Do you want to pick me up around six?”

Nate’s smile spreads, and so does mine. I have a date. An actual date. What the hell have I gotten myself into?
