Knowing I would see Nate later only made time seem to go by slowly. Work dragged on. The fact that Nate and Rob didn’t come in for lunch was a little disappointing as well, though I know it’s irrational to expect them to eat here every day. Especially when I’ll get to see Nate later anyway.

I’ve got it bad for him.

I’m still surprised by how quickly my feelings have developed for him. Just last week, I told Kim I wasn’t interested in dating, and now here I am, going on my third date in three days. Kim doesn’t even know yet. I’m not ready for the third degree she’s sure to give me, but I do want to tell her about Nate. I’ll call her tomorrow—after our date tonight.

Tonight. This date holds a lot of promise. We’re planning to go to his hotel room. If all goes well, I’ll finally have sex as an adult. It sounds funny, but I’m curious whether it’ll live up to all the hype. Back in high school, sex with Jarred was okay, and of course it felt good, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I discovered what an actual orgasm feels like, thanks to my trusty vibrator. I’m hoping Nate’s skills put Jarred’s to shame … not that it would be too difficult to do.

As I take one final look in the mirror and smooth my soft curls—I decided to break out my curling iron and really do my hair and makeup for tonight’s date—the sound of the doorbell alerts me that Nate is here.

Taking a deep breath to help steady my nerves—yes, I’m a little nervous—I turn to head downstairs. Noah’s voice carries upstairs, and I can hear him telling Nate all about playing hockey in PE today at school. He was excited about it. It was all he could discuss when I got home from work.

“And I whacked the puck so hard it went into the net thingy!” Noah says animatedly, waving his arms for emphasis as I step off the final stair behind Nate. He’s so enthralled in Noah’s story that he doesn’t notice I’m there.

“That’s awesome, dude,” Nate tells him. “You should ask your mom to sign you up for a hockey team.”

Surprised by his comment, I clear my throat to announce my presence. Nate turns, seemingly startled by my silent arrival, but his lips curl into a sexy smile the moment he sees me. My stomach flutters at the sight of him.

“Mom! Can I?” Noah asks, not missing a beat but clearly failing to notice the intimate exchange between Nate and me.

“You look beautiful,” Nate says, his voice low and alluring.

“So do you,” I whisper, looking deeply into his blue eyes.

“Mom!” Noah’s impatience steals my attention.

I turn to my little boy. “What?” I ask, kneeling to his level.

“Can I join a hockey team?” His eyes dance with excitement.

Not sure how to answer his question—are there even hockey teams in Port Townsend?—I pat his shoulder and reply, “We’ll see about that, okay? It would definitely be cool!” Noah nods. “Now, Nate is taking me out to dinner, and I’ll be back later tonight. You be good for Grandma, okay?”

He nods, then looks up at Nate. “Have fun. I’ll let you know if I make it on a hockey team.”

“Sounds good,” Nate replies.

Noah turns his attention back to me and wraps me in a hug. “Will you be home in time to tuck me in?”

Oh, my sweet boy. Way to give me Mommy guilt for going out.

I squeeze him a little tighter. “I don’t know. If I’m not, Grandma will tuck you in, and I’ll sneak in to check on you when I get home.”

Just then, Mom calls from the kitchen. “Dinner’s ready, Noah!”

Noah pulls back and looks at me. “Don’t forget to check on me when you get home.”

I ruffle the hair on top of his head. “I won’t. Don’t worry. Now, go eat your dinner.”

Noah turns to run down the hallway toward the kitchen. “Bye!” he calls behind him.

Standing, I turn to face Nate. “Ready?”

“Definitely,” Nate replies, reaching for the front doorknob. He opens the door, his crooked grin making me wonder what’s going through his mind. “After you.”

I grab my purse from the coat hook, then walk out onto the porch. After fishing my keys out of my purse, I stop to lock the front door behind us. As soon as I turn around to leave, Nate is there, just inches from me, his full lips just begging to be kissed.

Keeping eye contact with Nate, I mindlessly slide my keys back into my purse. If I had my way, he’d reach out and pull me closer before lowering his lips to mine.
