“No, it’s not like that at all,” I hurriedly say. Jumping out of bed, I hope I’ll be able to explain. “Please believe me—”

“Fuck you, Nate,” Shawna says, tears stinging her eyes. She begins getting dressed. “You knew who I was, didn’t you? You knew I had a connection to Jarred and pursued me for information.”

“Yes, but no!” I round the bed, hoping she’ll listen. “Believe me when I say—”

“No, Nate! I’m done listening to all your confessions tonight. Explaining all your lies to me. Fuck you and leave me and my family the fuck alone.” She pulls her shirt over her head, then flips her hair back with both hands. “How am I ever supposed to believe a word you say? Everything you’ve told me is a lie.”

She heads toward the door, grabbing her purse.

“No, it wasn’t all a lie, Shawna,” I say. “I just——”

She turns around to face me. Her eyes are like daggers. “You just fucked everything up. Leave me alone! I’ll call an Uber. Don’t fucking follow me or talk to me ever again!”

As she slams the door behind her, I’m left standing in my hotel room feeling like the biggest asshole on the planet.
