It doesn’t take long to arrive at the house. There’s no traffic on the road, so Rob pulls up next to Smith and Nelson’s Tahoe parked on the side of the road. I roll down my window, and Nelson, in the driver’s seat, does the same. The rain pelts my face, so I lean to my left a little to avoid it.

“How’s it going?” I ask.

They both shrug, and Nelson replies, “It’s been really quiet here. No one has been in or out of the driveway, and the house is dark.”

“You guys must be exhausted. Go get some sleep, but keep your phones on in case we need you.”

Nelson starts the engine. “Sounds good. See you guys later.”

I roll up the window as he drives off, and then Rob pulls into Alice’s driveway. “I just want to make sure no one is here,” he says.

He parks and cuts the engine, and we both get out. We briskly walk around the property, and I wish I had a waterproof coat with a hood, or at least an umbrella. We walk up the front and back porches to peer in the windows, but no one’s here.

“Why else would he come to town?” Rob asks as we jog back to the car to get out of the rain. “He has to make an appearance at his mom’s house, don’t you think?”

I get back in the passenger side and shut the door, then try to shake all the water off me. “I would think so. If he didn’t come to town for his mom’s house, he might be here for Shawna and Noah.”

Shit. Maybe we should’ve found a way to do surveillance at Shawna’s house. I was worried about their well-being before, but I’m suddenly overwhelmed with anxiety.

Rob parks the Tahoe down the street, where we still have a view of the driveway and mobile home. “Maybe we should drive by Shawna’s house again?” I suggest.

“You think?” Rob asks. “What if he comes here while we’re gone?”

He’s right. It’s impossible to know what Jarred Feldman’s going to do. “I don’t know. It was just a thought I had.”

“If he just got into town yesterday, he might’ve been too tired to deal with his mom’s property after he got here. That means he’ll probably show up here today and most likely this morning to get it over with. That sounds logical, right? We’re already taking a chance with leaving to drive you to Shawna’s bar a little later. Maybe we should’ve rented another car.”

I nod, agreeing with him. He’s right. I think my feelings for Shawna are interfering with my rational thought. We need to stick to the plan. Hopefully, Jarred Feldman will fall right into our hands. Finally.
