“That meeting I left for? They didn’t show up. It was a fucking distraction,” he says while carrying me out.

I nod, and my shoulders sink. “I’m sorry I left home. Braden kept calling, and he sounded frantic and worried until I agreed to come. When I got here, those guys were all here waiting.”

“Fucking Braden,” he growls. “I’m gonna kill that motherfucker.”

“He’s still in there, tied to a chair.” If there’s a chance to save him and make him pay for what he’s done, I’ve done my part.

“Let him burn,” Shades says easily. The moment I feel the cool air on my skin, I know I’m safe.

At least safe from the fire. “Thank you, Shades, for rescuing me.”

“Keep your head down, babe, and don’t worry. I got you.”

I nod even though he can’t see me and let myself relax against him, at least until I hear the distinct sound of gunshots.

“Oh my God!”

“You’re all right,” he says and places one comforting hand on the back of my thighs. More gunshots sound as we move across the parking lot, along with the distinct thunder of motorcycles.

“About fuckin’ time,” Shades says as he sets me on my feet and pulls me close. He tucks me under his arm as he looks at the group of men stepping from their bikes.

“Thank you,” I say to them just as my legs buckle and everything around me goes black.
