He couldn’t explain why. Didn’t understand it. But something in the back of his mind warned him to stay out of those woods and so, he had.

“It’s not bad necessarily, but…” Zoey seemed to be thinking long and hard about what she wanted to say and she finally gave a small shake of her head, “It’s life changing.”

Zander was sure his face showed his skepticism because he couldn’t keep it out of his voice, “Our lives have been vastly different up to this point, Zoey. I’m not sure anything you could say would surprise me enough to be considered life changing.”

Zoey sighed, “I really wish Nova could tell me how you’re going to handle this information so I would know what to expect but she said it’s still too blurry, too many different paths and possible outcomes.”

“Nova?” Zander furrowed his brow, “You mean the teenage girl I met in your old apartment? Maya’s sister?”

“Yes, I do.”

“What is she, a fortune teller or something?” Zander joked.

From everything he’d learned about Zoey and her family over the past few days he hadn’t expected her to be the kind of person that based her actions on what a woman with a deck of cards and some herbs said. Though Nova hadn’t looked like that type either which was why he assumed Zoey must be joking.

Nova had been kind and welcoming while he was in her apartment. And though most of his attention had gone to and stayed on Maya DeLuca, he’d noticed the younger girl was the one who stepped up to welcome them in and offer them food, drinks and anything else they needed. He thought he had a good sense about people, especially con artists, and she hadn’t come off as one to him at all.

“Or something.” Zoey seemed to take a deep breath before she looked him in the eye, “I guess we have to start somewhere and that’s as good a place as any.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Nova is what we call a Seer. She has the gift of foresight. It’s an incredibly rare ability, very special, but it can also be a curse for her. Sometimes she can’t change bad things she sees coming. Sometimes she can’t see certain outcomes at all. Her own future is a blank canvas to her but…”

“Wait.” Zander cut her off. “Are you fucking with me right now?”

“No.”

“Are you sure? Because this sounds like the start of a really bad joke.”

“I’m not joking, Zander. Everything I’m going to tell you is real and it’s taking a lot for me to trust you with this information. Please, just listen and know that what I’m telling you is the truth, even if it’s hard to accept.”

“Okay.” He nodded thoughtfully, surprised by the vehemence in Zoey’s voice. “So… Nova is a…”

“A Seer.”

“Okay.” he repeated, “So, what you’re trying to tell me is that the sweet little teenage girl I met the other night is some sort of… witch?”

“God, no.” Zoey shook her head. “Witches are… well, they aren’t like us. Nova is a Seer. She was born with the ability. It’s not a spell or a potion. She was just born with this extra ability, like how some people are born with a natural talent for sports or science.”

Zander stared at Zoey for a long time, trying to decide if she was actually serious. Had she really just said witches weren’t like them? As if witches were real? This was the kind of thing he could imagine seeing on a prank show but Zoey wasn’t laughing and she’d sworn that she was telling him the truth. She looked as serious and thoughtful as she had when she’d caught him lurking in the shadows.

He cleared his throat, decided to go along with it because he didn’t understand why she was telling him about Nova’s special abilities in the first place, “Okay. So…? That’s what you wanted to tell me?”

“What?” Zoey tilted her head and then shook it quickly, “No. Sorry. I went off topic”

“So this conversation isn’t about Nova or her supposed superpowers. Check.” He gave a quick nod.

Zoey groaned and rubbed her eyes, “I told Rafe I was going to screw this up. He was the one born into it. He should have stayed to explain it to you.”

Zander frowned, “Explain what to me?”

“That the world you live in isn’t as simple as you think it is. That there’s a whole other world hidden away from the one that humans live in because most people would freak the fuck out if they knew that the supernatural things they put in their scary movies were actually real. That I’m one of those scary monsters now and maybe, if you decide to stay and seal the mate bond, you will be too.”

He stared at Zoey again, trying to figure out what the hell she was talking about. Magic. Monsters. Mate bonds. A world that humans didn’t know about. He was having a hard time keeping up because nothing she was saying made any sense.

“Zo…” He rubbed his eyes this time, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know. I’m sorry. That’s what I’m trying to tell you but I’m not doing it very well. Clearly.”
