“Eloquent as always.”
“You have a better word for it?” He teased, nuzzling her neck.
“Life-changing.” She opened her eyes to slits to stare at him. “Or is that too mushy and dramatic?”
“It’s perfect. Because you have been life-changing for me.”
“You’re such a softie for a guy that would set off metal detectors.”
He laughed, “I’m more than meets the eye.”
“You really are.” Maya turned her head to look him in the eye and her smile was soft and hesitant, “And I’m so glad that fate chose you for me.”
“Yeah?” He smiled back, unable to keep the question inside, not when she was looking at him like that, like she thought she was the lucky one in this relationship.
“I know I’ve been hesitant and I’ve tried to keep you at arms-length but…” Maya sighed, looking back up at the blue sky overhead instead of directly at him. “That’s a lot more about me than it is you. I need you to know that. I’m just… scared, of what it all means.”
“Changing me into a wolf you mean?”
“Not just that but yes, turning a human is… it can be dangerous, even for a fated mate.” Maya shook her head, “But it also means a change for my wolf and I don’t know yet how she’s going to react.”
Zander leaned up on an elbow to look down at her, “Have you spoken to anyone about your worries?”
She shook her head. He’d known she would. She was so strong. She thought she could handle everything herself. But she didn’t have to carry the weight of everything on her shoulders alone anymore and he was going to prove that to her, if only she would let him.
“Maybe you should.” He offered. “I know it’s not the same thing but, it’s really helped me to be able to talk to Zoey and especially to Rafe, over these last few days. Sometimes just saying what you’re scared of out loud to someone who will listen and not judge, can really change your perspective.”
“I’m almost too afraid to ask what else you’ve gone to Rafe for advice about after the whole orgasms as a weapon conversation.” She smirked.
“He’s a good guy.” Zander shrugged.
“He is.” Maya agreed. “And your sister is lucky to have him as a mate. They’re a good match.”
“Your siblings have good matches too. Luna has Michael and Leo has Darius. I’m sure if you talked to either of them, they could help with whatever has you so worried.” He reached up and brushed her hair back. “If you don’t want to confide in me quite yet.”
Maya reached for his hand, drawing it to her mouth and kissing it gently, “It’s not that I don’t want to confide in you. I swear. It’s just that, this is something I need to talk to Leo about. I’ve needed to talk to him about it for a while actually, but now that you’re here and the full moon is coming, I can’t put it off any longer.”
“Well…” Zander traced her full lips with his finger, “Maybe just a little bit longer?”
Maya grinned, rolling towards him, “You think you’re ready for round two, loverboy?”
“Oh, absolutely I am.” He pulled her on top of him and kissed her.
“I suppose I can talk to my brother tomorrow.” Maya practically glowed and her happiness lit Zander up from the inside.
“No more talk about siblings. Not when my cock is hard.” He teased.
Maya giggled, “So… never?”
“Exactly.”
He was grinning as he rolled her to the ground again and kissed her. She wrapped herself around him and gave as good as she took. They spend most of the afternoon in their little clearing in the woods, making love and talking and touching.
It was the best day Zander could remember having in a very, very long time.
Chapter Sixteen
Maya knocked on the door of the familiar house in the center of Crescent territory and held her breath as she heard a voice yell to wait a minute. She swore if she scented sex when they opened the door that she was leaving. She wanted to talk to her brother, needed his advice, but she’d accidentally walked in on Leo and Darius enough times when she was living here that she wasn’t sure she could take another eyeful at this point and not be scarred for eternity. When the door swung open a minute later she was relieved to see that her brother’s mate was fully clothed, if a little messy.
