A flash of horror crosses her face.

“Joking.” I strain out a chuckle or two.

“We broke up this morning.” As if he cared enough previously to claim me.

The false revelation softens Hilary’s shoulders. “Let’s reminisce. Remember when you started high school?”

“You had a thick binder of popular kids to befriend and who not to stick around. Which classes to take. Which teachers were cool and which were fucks. That type of dedication would kick college’s ass, Hil.”

Nostalgic laughter surrounds us. My sister signals for me to drink down my orange juice. While I glance toward the kitchen area, Hillary sneaks bubbly into our glasses. It’s like old times, except no Mom or Dad. But no matter how good it feels, I’ve fallen so far. I miss a guy I should hate.
