“Okay. Thank you.” My brain spins, trying to process all the information. Absorb the fact that this is really and truly happening.

“Any questions, call me at this number. Got it?”

“Got it,” I confirm.

“There will be a car waiting for you in Cologne.” Then, she hangs up.

I’m back in the break room that always smells faintly of burned popcorn. I knew this was coming, but all of a sudden, it feels much more real.

“Who was that?” Chris asks, nosy as always.

“Sutton’s assistant, letting me know about my flight.”

“And? When are you leaving?”

“Tomorrow night,” I reply, then glance at Tanya. “Doesn’t look like I’ll be able to make it to Duke’s. I don’t know much about sports anyway. I probably wouldn’t have been much help.”

Tanya smiles, but it’s a fake one. Small and tight. “Have fun on tour, Teddy.”

“Thanks. I’ll, uh, see you when I get back?”

She nods. “Yeah. I’ll be here.”

“Okay,” I say softly.

Tanya gets up and leaves a few seconds later.

“Well, that was awkward,” Chris states.

I sigh before taking another bite of cupcake so I don’t have to say anything.
