I set a fast rhythm. Sliding out. Slamming in. Sutton’s legs tighten around me, pulling me in deeper and deeper. Her breathing turns harsh and staccato as she arches against me, moans spilling out of her mouth. I kiss her, swallowing the sounds of her pleasure. Not only because I don’t want anyone outside to hear, but also because I’m possessive of them. Her moans are meant for me. No one else.

She clenches around me, setting off my second orgasm. We’re both breathing heavily.

The blinding pleasure hasn’t fully faded when she pulls away. I step away automatically, giving her space to grab her underwear and pull it back on as I readjust my clothing and toss the condom.

Sutton says nothing as she tugs her dress down and smooths her hair. No smile. Nothing. Uneasiness trickles in, erasing the last whispers of euphoria.

Her expression is blank when she meets my gaze and finally speaks. “I need to talk to Suzan about something. Can you send her in on your way out?”

It’s a dismissal, plain and simple. I know she’s busy. I know she’s about to perform and there will be no repeat of the spooning that followed sex last night.

But I expected something more than the nothing I’m getting.

She brushes past me, headed for the mirror where she just watched us be as intimate as we’re suddenly distant.

“Hey.” I catch her wrist, stalling her in place. “Are you okay?”

Sutton doesn’t meet my gaze. She stares straight ahead as she replies to the question, “Yeah, I’m fine. I just needed a distraction.”

That last word stings. The hottest sexual encounter I’ve ever experienced was just adistractionto her.

“Got it. Happy to oblige.”

She looks at me, an emotion that looks like regret passing across like a stray cloud. I can’t tellwhatshe’s regretting, though. Me?

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Didn’t you?”

Sutton turns, so our bodies are angled toward each other, not facing separate directions. She hesitates, lifting her hand like she wants to touch me, but isn’t sure if she should. She does, trailing her fingers up my right arm and curling them around my shoulder. “I wanted a distraction. Mostly, I wantedyou.”

“I’m right here, June.”

She nods in response, paired with a weak, “Yeah.”

I study her expression. “Did something happen?”

“I can’t talk about it right now. Not right before a show.”

“Do youwantto talk about it?”

“Yes.” Her immediate response alleviates a little of the weirdness between us. “Just not right now.”

“Okay.”

“Okay,” she echoes, just as there’s a knock on the door.

“Sutton? You ready?” a voice I recognize as Suzan’s asks from the other side.

“Yeah. One sec,” Sutton calls back. She lowers her voice. “Do I look like I spent the past fifteen minutes running through an arrangement with you?”

“That’s our story?”

“Unless you have a better idea that doesn’t involve my sensational blowjob skills.”

I fight a smile. “Running an arrangement works.”

She smirks before she turns and heads toward the door.
