Mrak gently raised a hand to my face, holding it in his massive, clawed hand. “Risking you terrifies me.”

“I’m strong enough.” He’d said it before, and I believed him. Determination had nestled its way deep into my chest. It was now an anchor. Icoulddo this. “If I get hurt, you can heal me. You’ve brought me back from the brink of death, and I’ve fought my way through hell several times over.” I nodded, mostly to reassure myself. “Icando this. I’ll survive the transformation. Besides, won’t you want another shadow demon on your side?”

This time, I did cast a quick look at Karn. I wanted him to know I didn’t trust him a damn bit.

Karn’s eyes narrowed. Message received loud and clear. “Is this what you want, my king?”

Was it me, or did the word ‘king’ out of Karn’s mouth sound seriously insincere?

Mrak held my gaze for a long set of moments, during which it felt as though he was holding me in place with his six crimson eyes. As though a magnetism had formed between us. I felt it then, like I hadn’t since before coming here. Before we’d been separated physically.

His magic washed over me, bathing me in intense feelings of love and power. Of promise and possibility.

I felthimagain. His presence. His trust. His future. All of it before me, and me in his hands. Holding me. Keeping me safe. Just as he’d promised over a year ago.

Mrak finally nodded slowly, although I could see the restraint and hesitation locked tight in his jaw. “Yes.”

Karn inhaled sharply, like a man who’d just been stabbed. “Then I shall prepare the Shadow Sanctum for the ritual.”
