“I’m done with you.” The vein in his forehead is throbbing. His eyes are reddened, and he still can’t sit still.
I don’t know what he wants me to say, but he looks at me like he’s waiting for something. “Okay, Peter.”
“Okay? That’s all I get? After everything I did for you?! All you’re going to say is, OKAY? You’ve been sitting pretty in your little new job, talking trash about me and you’re not even going to apologize? Wow. I thought you were better than this, Sam. I thought you were better.”
I can’t tell Peter that I’m sorry. I can’t apologize for breaking up with him. But I want him to leave, I want him to have closure. I can’t let him get too angry because I still don’t know what he’s capable of, so I try something else. “I didn’t mean to spread any rumors, Peter. I didn’t mean to hurt you at all. But I need to go home now. It’s time for me to leave. So could you please just step away from my car so I can go?”
“No! Say it! I want you to tell me that you’re sorry!”
Each time he raises his voice, it makes me jump. My adrenalineis pumping. I don’t know what to do. I’m out of options. Do I give up and tell Peter that I’m sorry? Do I step on the gas, maybe running over his feet in the process? I’m trying to think of ways to get out of this when I see something in the corner of my eye. Towards the back of my car, Chris is standing there.
“I think it’s time to leave, Peter. Go home.”
Thank God he didn’t leave yet. Though I worry he’s been watching this entire thing and questioning my motives. I hope he would trust me by now, in saying that I want nothing to do with Peter. I know he trusts me. I’m terrified for him now, standing up to a man that could have murdered his last assistant. Peter slinks back from my car.
“What did you say to me?”
“Peter, give it up. It’s time for you to leave.”
Without hesitation, Peter reels back a fist and punches Chris straight on the right side of his ribs. Chris grunts in pain. And I’m terrified for what’s about to happen.
