Chapter Twenty-Four

Luke

We arrived home fortyminutes later. My woman fell asleep in the car. She woke up abruptly once I parked in the underground garage, rubbing her eyes as we went up in the elevator.

“How was the evening?” I asked.

“I loved it. Being with the girls was like having family.”

“Babe, we are your family. Anything you want or need, we’re here.I’mhere.”

“You really mean that?” she whispered.

“Fuck yes.” I searched her face, wanting her to know I was serious, though I couldn’t help but grin.

“Why are you looking at me like that? Like you’re laughing at a private joke?” she asked as we stepped inside.

“You were cute in the car.”

“I’m sure I look like a scarecrow. My hair was plastered to the window.”

"Babe, no matter what, you're still beautiful to me."

“I don’t feel like that at all. I've eaten like a million things. I can barely suck in my belly. I have a food baby."

"You look great," I told her.

"Ha, that's because I'm sucking it in. See, this is how it looks if I don't. I literally look pregnant."

She kind of did. But damn, it was a good look on her.

"What's with that expression?" she asked, sucking in her belly again.

"Nothing."

"It was definitelysomething. I kind of saw your Neanderthal eyes shine."

"What?"

"I can't explain it. You have this expression—it’s almost scary, but mostly it's just sexy. So? Spill it."

"You'd look good with a baby in there, babe."

She looked up at me, jerking her head back and blinking rapidly.

"Fuck, I can't believe I said it out loud." Her mouth formed anO. I cupped her face with both hands. "I know it's crazy to think that, Megan. But being with you always makes me act crazy, think crazy, mostly out of instinct. And I have to say that that desire to have a baby with you is more out of instinct than anything else. I want you all the time. I need you." I lowered my mouth to her neck. "I want to breathe you in. I'm not letting you go, Megan. I love you," I whispered against her skin and then straightened up, looking her in the eyes.

"Luke, I know I'm semi-drunk, but I've fallen for you so hard. I love you so much. I'll tell you tomorrow too, so you don’t think I’m just saying it because I’ve had too much to drink."

"I'll remind you. I so fucking will.”

She blinked a couple times. Her eyes were full of confusion—maybe even fear.

“Talk to me, Meg,” I said. “I know with the age difference between us, you want other things—or at least a slower pace.”

She shook her head. “It’s not about that. The age gap doesn’t bother me at all. We like the same things and really click on most everything. It’s just that... I’m afraid, you know? To believe this can last. My ex stopped loving me after six years. What if... what if you change your mind too?”

“Meg, I can promise you the world, but they’d be just words. I’m going to prove it to you every day. We're going to go at your pace, babe. But not tonight. We're going at my pace on this. Playing by my rules," I said right before I kissed her.
