We walk past my house and down to the bakery, where we load up on cookies, chips, and fancy soda.

When we get back to the deck with all the goodies, I apologize for running off.

“I know you guys are always here for me, but sometimes… I need space. To think. But I’m glad you guys had my back.”

“Always,” Miles says. “We’re in it together.”

We all raise our soda cans up and smash them together.

I look around at them, and I’m grateful.

Most people don’t get this.

This kind of friendship.

Beyond friendship.

A lot of the people are so mean in middle school because they don’t know who they can trust. Friendships break up over nothing at all.

But not ours.

Ours gets stronger.

Because wealwayshave each other’s backs. Miles is right, we’re in it together.

No matter what it is, the six of us arealwaysin it together.

When we get to school the next morning, we all look between each other. None of us know exactly what to expect, only that the school called and said we wouldn’t be in trouble. Well, for the most part. The boys have lunch detention for fighting.

Right as we get to the door, Aaron puts his arm around my shoulders.

“We got this,” he says.

I slide my hand between his back and his backpack and squeeze at his waist.

“Yeah, we do,” I say.

Throughout the day, we find out in bits and pieces what happened.

The bathroom stalls are being painted over.

The boys who got in the fight got two days of in-school suspension for that and what they said.

The girls who were saying things each got after-school detention for two days.

And now everyone is being very friendly with us. Smiling at us.

I think the girls are afraid of getting in trouble if we think they’re saying things about us.

I think the boys are afraid of Aaron, Miles, and Joel.

But, regardless, everything seems a whole lot calmer now.

Oh, and everyone who was saying things about me has to apologize to me in person. In frontof the guidance counselor.

Which will be awkward and embarrassing.

So, it’s kinda like karma, I think.

Anyway, I still hate middle school. But maybe I hate it a little bit less now.
