I roll my eyes and shake my head as Joel and Aaron laugh hysterically.

“Remind me again why I’m friends with the three of you.”

“Because you love us,” Aaron says.

“And because your life would be boring without us,” Miles adds.

“Plus, welove you,” Joel says, his troublemaking smile creeping onto his face.

I look at him, uncertain of what’s about to happen.

That’s when the three of them jump onto the bed and attack me with tickles.

And I can’t help but laugh because, as annoying as they can be, I love the assholes.

We did finally get some studying done, and while we’re not exactly confident in our skills, we feel like we at least won’t fail.

I’m in a pretty good mood when I get back home.

Until I realize I promised Davey I would call him. But I decide to give him a chance. I said I would. So I will. One last chance.

I lie back on my bed and dial Davey.

“Hey,” he answers with his sweet voice on. And it softens me a little.

“Hi,” I say, trying to keep an edge from my voice.

“How was studying?”

“Eh, well, I’m reasonably confident I won’t fail, but beyond that…”

“I’m sure you’ll be fine. Miles is a math whiz.”

“Maybe, but even he was struggling. Thankfully, Aaron kept us on task. Joel and I were ready to give up and binge-eat our feelings.”

“Cooper was there?” he asks. And I hear that pang of jealousy in his voice. The one that immediately makes me huffy. “I thought it was only gonna be Miles and Joel.”

“It was, but then Aaron and Marisol broke up, so I went to see him and—”

“You were alone with him? Like, in his room?”

“Don’t do this, Davey. I didn’t lie to you about my plans. My best friend needed me. We were briefly alone. And a quick reminder here that of the two of us, I have not been the one flirting with other people. That’s all you. Then he came back with me to Miles’s house, where we all embraced the suck and studied for our shitty test. It was super hot and sexy. We even thought about having an orgy.”

“Don’t mock me, Rae.”

“Well, you sound ridiculous,” I counter. “I told you my best friends come with the package. But I’m starting to think you don’t want it anymore, anyway.”

“Well, how would you feel if I were alone with some other girl in her bedroom?”

“Probably pretty shitty, since you don’t have any female friends.”Well, not really. He has some acquaintances. His closest female “friend” is probably Ashley James, and she’s the last person I would trust with anyone about anything.

Focusing back on Davey, I say, “Aaron has been my best friend since we were five years old. I’ve told you before, I won’t apologize for our friendship. I’ve even tried to spend less time with him, especially alone, because I know you don’t like it. But don’t do this. Don’t force me to choose between the two of you because a lifelong friendship wins out over a boy who flirts with other girls in front of me.”

“You just made your own point, Rae. You choose him. Youwanthim.”

“Oh my god. I am not having this conversation again. I won’t. Have a good night, Davey.”

Then I hang up, and I put my phone on silent. I lie in bed trying to remember everything I sort of learned about geometric proofs today. Great, I’ve officially hit a point where I’d rather think aboutmaththan my relationship with Davey or whatever the hell everyone else thinks is happening between Aaron and me.
