“Yeah…”

“Whose arms would you have jumped into?”

My heart pounds as I stare at him. He gives me a little smirk because he knows my answer.Aaron. Not him. Not Joel or Miles.Aaron. Always Aaron. It’s always us. Since I decided to open my heart and mind to all things Aaron and me, I’ve realized that everyone else was right about us. We may not have been choosing it, but we’ve always been pulled to each other.

“Yeah,” he says, squeezing my shoulder, “that’s what I thought. Don’t be so afraid of it, Rae.”

I laugh. “Davey, you remember when we first started dating, and you asked what I was scared of?” He nods. “Well, now you’ve got your answer.”

Because nothing in this world terrifies me more than Aaron. What Aaron and I could be. If we would fall for each other, and what would happen if we hurt each other. Would we break forever? Every fear I’ve ever had is wrapped up in Aaron and everything we are or could be. We could be so much together, but we could also crush each other into oblivion.

“Trust your gut—no—” He shakes his head. “Trust your heart, Rae. I know you like to think, but thinking won’t get you out of this. Or into it. Anyway, I know I might not see you around much, but I wish you the best, and—” He looks at me sheepishly. “Thanks for seeing something in me that other people didn’t. I can’t say I’m completely different now, but I’m taking little steps I wouldn’t have taken if it weren’t for you.”

I smile at him. “Have an amazing time in North Carolina. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet the girl there who believes in you in even more ways than me. Who you never wonder if she’ll hurt you. I hope you do. Good luck, Davey.”

“You too, Rae. You too,” he says with a smile.

The buses pull up as the rest of the boys exit the stadium. Davey waves and jogs toward the bus.

A few seconds later, Aaron steps up to me. “Everything okay there?”

I can’t help it. I get a megawatt smile when I stare at his face.

“He was apologizing. And I think saying goodbye. Doesn’t matter. You’re what matters,” I say. I don’t even know exactly what I mean by that. “You were incredible tonight, Ace. In every way.”

A smirk crosses his lips, quickly growing into a wide smile. He reaches for my hand and gently runs his fingers over mine. “Thanks, Beautiful.” He looks over at the bus, then back at me. He gives me a quick kiss on the cheek. “I’ll see you back at school.” He winks at me and jogs to the bus. And like some girl swooning over a rockstar, I stand there and watch him go, a cheesy smile on my face the whole time.

I’m sitting on the hood of Aaron’s truck in the school parking lot when the bus pulls up. I watch the boys come down the stairs to a tunnel of people with hands out for high fives. There’s still lots of screaming.

Aaron comes out with a proud smile on his face. Through the crowd, he sees me and gives me a smirk. He trots over to me, high fiving and fist bumping people along the way.

He’s got a swagger about him tonight. A newfound confidence like he could take on the world. When he gets to the truck, he doesn’t stop moving. He scoops me up in his arms and spins me around. I wrap my arms around his neck and look up at him.

“It was a hell of a game,” I say with a smile.

“Thanks for calming me down.”

“Any time.” I squeeze my arms tighter around his neck and pull my head up to kiss him on the cheek.

He looks at me, eyes a little wild.

Then he sets me down on the hood of the car, leans into me, and kisses me.

It’s a sexy open-mouth kiss.

Excitement and electricity shoot through me.

If I wasn’t crushing on him before, I am now. My whole body is heating up.

And then his tongue grazes over the edge of my bottom lip. Slowly, it moves inside my mouth.

I finally pull myself out of the shock that Aaron is kissing me like this and let my tongue move with his.

It’s slow and soft, like a perfectly choreographed dance.

And it feelsincredible.

I don’t care that we’re crossing a line we’ve never crossed before. Actually, I do, but it’s not scary like I thought it would be. It feels right.
