I smile softly at him. “Well, I’m not exactly a wallflower, but when all I do is hang around with the boys, I think I start to blend in with them.”

“You guys are all close, right?” he asks, walking with me up the stairs.

“Yeah, they’re my best friends. Well, Aaron, Joel, and Miles are. The rest of them are my annoying friends that I tolerate,” I say with a smirk.

“I’ve seen you play baseball with them. And when Coach invites you out to hit a round with the team, you’re great.”

“Thanks,” I say with a genuine smile. Complimenting my baseball skills is never a bad way to go with me. “He was our coach when we were kids, and he knows my dad, so he sometimes invites me out to play when there’s nothing too serious going on. It’s a lot of fun. I’d totally play on the team if they let me.”

“How come you don’t play softball?” he asks, seeming genuinely curious.

“It’s different. I was never as good at it or had as much fun with it,” I explain, slowing down as I get to my classroom.

“This you?” he asks.

“Yep. Chemistry.” And for some reason, that word hangs there.

Chemistry.

That’s definitely what I’m feeling with Davey right now.

My back is against the lockers, and he brings one hand up next to my head, resting his weight on it.

His head dips down and his eyes meet my gaze as he leans in close to me and licks his lips again.

He was pretty sincere during our conversation. And I feel strangely comfortable with him. He doesn’t feel like as much of a dick as I was expecting. And not nearly as overconfident. Maybe it’s all rumors.

“So,” I say, looking in his eyes, “now that you’ve noticed me, what do you think?”

He brings his other hand up to his face and sexily rubs it down his jaw and over his chin.

He leans in a little closer and whispers, “That I was wrong. You’re not cute. You’re hot.”

The warning bell goes off and he gives me a sexy grin.

“Maybe I’ll see you later.”

I don’t say anything. I just give him a slight nod and a sexy smile in response.

He pushes himself off the locker, gives me a wink, and walks away.

And, oh my, I feel like I need to fan myself.

Mackie strolls over to me. “What the hell was that?”

I shake my head. “I’m not exactly sure.”

“Well, it looked like he’s into you.Reallyinto you.”

“It did seem that way,” I say in disbelief.

We exchange a glance and start laughing, then hurry inside before the second bell goes off.

Sarah and I sit down at the lunch table, interrupting some sort of conversation the boys are having.

Aaron looks at me and says, “Oh, and you’ll never guess who was hitting on Rae this morning.”

“Who?” Joel asks.
