Chapter nine

So Much More than That

Painshootsthroughmeas I twist and groan in my half-asleep state.

“Rae.” A hand shakes my shoulder. “Rae.”

I jolt upright, panting and clutching my side.

“Hey, are you okay?” A hand rolls over my shoulder, and I jump and turn to see Trevor standing there.

“Trev? What are you—” I look over at the clock. It’s just after midnight.

“I was sneaking through to see Sarah, but you were like writhing in bed. Are you okay?”

I groan. “Fine.”

“You seem it.”

“Hey, what’s going on in—” Sarah stops short, her eyes going super wide. “Rae baby, are you okay?”

“Yeah. Kinda. Mostly.”

“You don’t look it.” She crawls onto the bed and puts her hand on my head, checking for a fever. “What’s going on?”

“It hurts,” I note, gesturing below my stomach.

“Like cramps?” Sarah asks.

“No. Not exactly. It’s all on the right side and it’s more like a stabbing burning sort of feeling.”

Trevor’s eyes are huge. “Isn’t that where your appendix is?”

Sarah looks at me in concern.

“No. It’s not that. That freaked me out initially so I consulted Dr. Google. Appendix is lower, and if that was the issue, I’d have a fever, that whole area would be hot, and I’d probably be puking. Plus, it would hurt to touch. This actually feels better when I push on it. I honestly think it’s that thing.”

Trevor cocks an eyebrow. “Thatthing?”

I look at Sarah. “You know. It sounds German. And has to do with pain in your ovary—”

“Oh, yeah. I know what you mean. But, Rae baby, I don’t think it’s supposed to hurt that much.”

I wave a hand. “It’s probably because it’s the middle of the night. I’m sure I’ll be all right with a little ibuprofen.”

Sarah’s brow furrows. “I don’t know. Maybe I should go get Mom.”

I glance at Trevor. “You gonna hide him in the closet first?”

Sarah softens and squeezes my hand. “Your health is more important than us getting in trouble.”

“Thank you for that, but I really think I’ll be fine with some pain meds.”

She sighs, but gives me a firm nod. “Fine. I’ll get you some, but only if you promise to tell Mom in the morning, or sooner if you feel worse or the medicine doesn’t help.”

“I promise,” I say, extending my pinky. She wraps hers around mine then leaves to grab me the medicine.

“Liar,” Trevor says. “She might’ve believed you, but I know it’s worse than you’re telling her.”
