And I’m not sure why, but the thought of letting go of Aaron right now makes me feelhysterical. Literally, I latch my hand onto his arm and start crying hard.

Aaron looks questioningly at my dad. “I can stay. I’ll text my mom. She won’t care if I miss school because of this.”

“I’ll text her while we wait. If she says it’s okay, that’s fine with me.”

Aaron nods and slides into the back seat of the car, never letting go of me. He positions me in the center and buckles me in, then wraps an arm around my back and leans me against him. “Still got ya, Beautiful.”

“Thanks,” I murmur as Sarah slides in on the other side of me. Dad climbs in the driver’s seat, and Mom sits in the passenger seat.

“Your mother says it’s fine if you come with us,” Dad says to Aaron. “Hope you’re ready for the adventure.”

“Always,” Aaron says soothingly, rolling his fingers gently up and down my arm. This is the most relaxed I’ve felt in the last twenty-four hours. I let the weight of my head rest against his shoulder and almost doze off when he shifts in his seat.

“Sorry,” he whispers, pulling out his phone.

“You better not take a picture of me like this.”

He kisses my forehead. “Wouldn’t dream of it, Beautiful. I’m texting Marisol to let her know why I won’t be there today.”

“Oh, shoot. Davey texted me a couple of times last night, but I never texted him back.”

Sarah pulls my phone from her purse. “Here. Or I can text him if you want me to.”

“No, I can do it,” I say, taking the phone from her.

Me: I suck. I didn’t text you back last night.

Hot boyfriend: It’s okay. Are you okay?

Me: Uh, not exactly. I’m kinda on my way to the ER right now.

Instead of a text, I immediately get a call.

“Hi,” I answer quietly.

“The ER? Why? What’s going on?”

“Uh… you know how I mentioned I had that little pain on my right side?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, it’s not so little anymore.”

“Shit. I should’ve checked up on you last night.”

“No, it’s okay. I wasn’t being realistic about how bad it was until this morning.”

“Well, I still don’t like this. I can come after school or maybe sneak away during lunch.”

Aaron glances down at me.

“I appreciate it. But I don’t know what will be happening. I’ll keep you updated. Or Sarah will. Okay?”

He sighs. “Yeah. Lots of updates. Feel better, babe.”

“Thanks, Davey. Bye.”

“Bye.”
