I shake my head.

She chuckles and smiles. “Well, you might want to pay attention now because yourboyfriendis on his way in.”

Aaron. Weird-ass dream or not, I am excited to see him.

“Hey, babe.”

I choke on the breath I was taking.

Because Aaron is not who walks in.

Davey.

“Hi. What are you doing here?” I ask in surprise as he makes his way over to me. He has a smile on his face and his auburn hair is sexily mussed.

He leans down and gives me a long, slow kiss that makes my heartbeat speed up. My fingers curl into his shirt as I kiss him back.

He pulls away and smiles. “My grandparents need me to come over and help them out tonight, so I wouldn’t have been able to come see you, so I took advantage of having a double lunch.”

I run my hand over his cheek. “That’s sweet. Thank you.”

He gives me another kiss. “I can’t stay long, but I wanted to visit for a little while, at least. Though it seems you’re in good hands.”

Right. Never told him Aaron was here.

I tell him the whole story, and he tells me about his day. It’s nice and relaxing and it makes me feel good that he still wanted to see me even though I’m a hot mess.

As he’s getting ready to go, he leans over and says, “Can I tell you a secret?”

I nod.

“I’m pretty mad that I had that stupid meeting at school this morning, so I couldn’t have picked you up. I wish it had been me here cheering you up all day.”

I smile at him. “Me too.”

And even though I say it sincerely, it’s definitely a lie. Don’t get me wrong. I like Davey, but we haven’t been together long enough for him to give me that kind of comfort. I’m glad Aaron was the one with me today, because a month of dating someone can’t compare to eleven years of deep friendship and the comfort that brings.

Davey kisses my forehead. “Glad I got to see you now.”

There’s not a hint of a lie when I say, “Me too. Missed you.”

He gently kisses my lips. “I’ll call you later. Rest up.”

“Have a good night, babe.”

He winks at me and walks out the door.

Dad comes back to visit with me for a bit, then I conk out again.

I wake up to Aaron, holding my hand.

Dream or reality?

“Hey, Rae baby,” Sarah says brightly.

Reality. Cool.

“Hey.”
