My eyes grow wide. And realization hits. Hard.

“You guys? And the boys? Is that why they—”

Mackie waves a hand. “I don’t think that’swhythey were doing it. I think they’re territorial, but—”

“Still, they—you—see Aaron and me together? But we’re both dating other people! We—we—”

Oh my god. This is too much.Too. Freaking. Much.

They ship us!

Agh!

I can’t believe this. I can’t believe they all think we’re in love. That we’re meant to be. They’re shipping us? They want us to be together? They’re hoping for that? While we’re with other people. They see something? Is there something to see? Why don’t I see it? Or Aaron? Or does he? He always says no one would ever be good enough for me. But no, he’s with Marisol. He’s not interested in being with me. But he is the only other person who will understand why this is freaking me out.

I grab my phone.

Me: Are you home/busy?

Ace: Yes/No

Me: Need to talk to you.

Ace: Want me to come over?

Me: No. I’ll be at your house in 2 mins.

I launch myself off Sarah’s bed and head out the door.

“Where are you going?” Sarah yells after me.

“To talk to the boy you all think I’m supposed to be with.”

I storm through my room, sliding on a sweatshirt and boots, but not even bothering with a coat. My anger will keep me warm.

I run down the steps of the deck and hurry down the driveway.

I’d like to say I’m storming to Aaron’s house, but I’m stomping like a toddler. Marching with a cranky little pout on my face. The kind that would make Aaron poke my lip and say, “put that away.”

As I walk, I think back to the first day I met Aaron. That day changed a lot of things. Started our friend group in some ways. And of course, it changed me.

But did it start something with us?

Today I met Aaron Cooper. I was playing outside with Mom when we saw a moving truck pull into the driveway two houses away.

Mom smiled at me and said we should go make them a special treat. Later, we went over to give them the super yummy brownies we made. Mom made a pan for us, and I ate two of them. I also ate some of the batter when mom wasn’t looking.

Aaron’s mom was really nice, but Aaron seemed shy. I guess I would be too if I had just moved to a new neighborhood. Mom must’ve thought so too, because before we stopped by their house, she told me to help make them feel welcome.

Aaron was hiding behind his mom when I smiled and looked into his big brown eyes. “I’m glad you moved to our neighborhood. I can’t wait to play with you tomorrow!” Which was true. He smiled big when I said that. His eyes were all sparkly and his blond hair seemed even brighter when he stepped out onto his front porch to say thank you to me.

“I can’t wait to play with you, either,” he said. Then he gave me a look that made me think we’re definitely going to be very best friends.

Having figured out nothing, I stalk up Aaron’s front porch and let myself in. We never knock when the other knows we’re coming. I go straight upstairs and stand in front of Aaron’s door. I’m hurt, confused, pissed, and—I don’t even know what—about to lose my shit.

Aaron swings the door open and his eyes widen when he sees me.

“Is this about yesterday?” he quickly asks.
