Sarah shakes her head. “Nope. I just need to wallow in it.”

“I’ll order us some Chinese in a bit,” Joel says. “Then you get control of the remote all night. Anything you want.”

“EvenGilmore GirlsorOne Tree Hill?”

“Anything. Promise. And I can’t lie, I’m into OTH. The drama is…” he shakes his head and laughs.

I smile at that. “Hey, I’ll be back in a minute, okay?”

They both nod. Joel takes my spoon and starts eating ice cream, too.

He’s so good with her.

I slide on boots and a sweatshirt and climb out the window. Pulling my phone out, I quickly press the call button and shove it to my ear.

Trev’s voice is raw when he answers. “Rae?”

“Hey, I understand if you don’t want to talk to me, but… I need you to know I’m still here for you.”

“Thanks,” he sniffs.

“Listen, uh, this doesn’t change our friendship, okay? I know things are going to be different now, but I don’t want it to be different with us. We’ve gotten a lot closer over the last couple of years, and I don’t want to lose that, okay?”

“I don’t either.” He’s quiet for a minute, then he asks, “Did you know?”

“Not until after she asked you to come over. Not defending anything, but she’s hurting, too.”

“I know. That’s the worst part. I still want to comfort her.”

“I’m sorry, Trev. Just know we’re all here for you, okay?”

“Thanks. Greg, Hyla, and Jenny are here right now. I’m gonna go, but thank you for calling me. It means a lot.”

I wave to Miles as he rounds the top of the stairs.

“Of course. Love ya, buddy. Bye.”

“You too. Bye.”

I hang up and quickly send a text to Mackie.

Me: Take Trev some cookies. He could use them.

Mackie: ;) Already on my way.

I smile at that, shove my phone in my pocket, and look up at Miles, who is leaning against the banister next to me.

“Hey.”

“Hi. So. Today is kinda crazy,” he says.

“Tell me about it. I feel like I’m in upside-down land. I never would’ve imagined that Sarah would end things with Trevor and I’d still be with Davey.” I silently shake my head.

“How is all that?”

I shrug. “Not great at the moment. You know me. I’m trying to figure out how to fix it.”

He lets out a deep chuckle. “Sounds about right. You’ve always been a fixer.”
