“Okay buddy, mommy is going on a date tonight, so you get to hang out with me.” I ruffle Theo’s hair as he finishes up his dinner comprising of nuggets and mac and cheese, because the kid eats nothing else of nutritional value.

“What’s a date?” he asks before shoving a ranch coated nugget in his mouth. I scoot my chair away so I’m not in the line of condiment fire.

“Dude, chew slowly, please. I’m not in the mood to give you the Heimlich tonight.” I slide a napkin in his lap. “Not with your mom going out with someone who most likely wants to give that to her.” I mumble right before I get a soft swat to the head.

“Freddie will not be giving me anything close to the Heimlich,” Scarlett informs me as she sits down next to Theo a few inches away, also avoiding a shower of ranch before she leaves.

“A date is when you meet up and hang out with someone, baby.” She moves his cup closer to him and gives him a grin.

“But you hang out with me and Daddy. Is that a date?” Theo sucks up a mac and cheese noodle off his spoon with a big slurp.

“Nope, bud. Daddy and I are just friends who love you very much. Now, I gotta go, but I want you to have a lot of fun, okay?”

“Okay,” he singsongs through another mouthful of food, letting a glob of ranch fall to his shirt before wiping his filthy mouth with his sleeve. I grimace.

God, kids are so messy.

She stands and I stare a little too long at her legs exposed. She’s always been pretty with her high cheekbones, shiny blonde hair, and crystal-clear blue eyes, but aside from her classic beauty, she’s an amazing human being and mother. I look away because the vice around my neck threatens to suffocate me.

“Be good for Daddy,” she says before leaning down and kissing a clean section of hair on his little head.

She glances up and winks at me before straightening. Ugh, why did that wink have to pierce through me differently than all the other times she’s winked at me?

Swallowing, I nod, shoving up from the table to get a wipe for Theo’s face when he really needs a whole shower. “You be careful. With a name like Freddie Ruger, I’m inclined to believe he’s a serial killer. Take your Mace. And maybe a knife. Wait, he’s probably already got those on his person.” I laugh when she shoves my shoulder, shaking her head with a smile and a roll of her eyes as she heads for the door.

“I’ll stop back by afterward to say goodnight to bubs.” She bends down to slip her feet into her heels, and fuck me if her dress doesn’t ride up, exposing the back of her toned thighs. I close my eyes to escape the tantalizing image and inhale sharply.

“Sounds good. We’ll be waiting. But, seriously, is his name really Fred Ruger? Were his parents high when they named him?” I joke as she flips me the bird in jest before grabbing her purse from the iron hook and shutting the door behind her.

I poke fun at her because I can and she’s my best friend, but this date she’s going on has me in knots and not because of his name. That alone sends up red flags but… I can’t put a finger on why else I feel the need to snatch her back inside and demand she stay here and hang out with us.

The door shuts quietly, the snick loud in my head.

She’s back, bringing in the chill and petrichor scent of rain.

Swallowing down all the unwarranted nerves, I cringe because I didn’t hear her pull up over the sound of the pouring rain. I would’ve run out with the umbrella she left by the door.

Theo bounces up from the couch where we were lounging and watching a movie, to slide across the wood floor toward her.

Scarlett scoops him up and presses kisses to his unruly dark hair, her damp locks sticking to her face. Her clothes are drenched and as she puts him down, her dress clings to her body. Her nipples, erect through the fabric, draw my attention, and I gulp as cotton fills my throat. I shouldn’t be looking at her like this, but I can’t help the way my cock jumps at the sight.

“I missed you, Mommy,” he says as he hugs her leg. I pause the movie and fold up the blanket we were sharing, trying to read her body language to see how it went. Also, it gives my dick time to go down.

“I missed you too, baby. I wasn’t gone that long. But it was long enough.” She pries Theo off her leg and shakes out her wet hair, giving me a look that says it was a less than stellar occasion.

Why does my mouth want to smile at that?

“That bad, huh?” I keep said smile to myself as Scar sighs, shrugs, and plops down in one of my metal kitchen chairs, slapping her purse down on top of the table.

I take a seat across from her and put on my best ‘wanna talk about it’ face.
