“I found you,” he repeated. He cupped my face and kissed me hard, pressing his mouth against mine. His stubble scratched my skin, the slightly abrasive rasp sending shivers of pleasure down my spine. Possessive and savage, the kiss conquered me, banishing the images of the massacre. His tongue slid between my parted lips and took my mouth with powerful lashes.

Now that his biggest secret was out, it was as if he felt free to show me his passion without holding anything back. Or maybe it was the fright after Lukas had almost raped me. His fingers tangled in my hair and pulled me closer. I kissed his wounds, sealing them among our groans of pleasure. His hands roamed my body, slipping under my shirt and skirt, stroking my naked skin. I moaned into the kiss when his fingers slid between my legs and found my wetness. A groan, deep in his throat, reverberated in my chest. He stopped his hand before it reached the spot that ached the most.

Eyes wild with lust, he brushed my hair from my face. “There isn’t anything I want more than to take my time with you. But—”

Wheezing, I cupped his cheek. “We have to stop that team of Nazis sabotaging the radio station.”

He nodded and pressed his forehead to mine. “Hell, Kristin. It’s so damn weird. All that rage, I wanted to burn the world down because he touched you. And now…now I can’t stop touching you. To stop kissing you goes against my every instinct. It’s like having to cut off one of my limbs, but we have to move, we have to go.”

“I know.” Our breaths mingled, thickening with desire, happiness, and relief.

“Pierre shouldn’t be far.” He kissed my lips before standing up, holding my hands. “Let’s go.”

“Pierre?” My torn skirts fell over my legs when I rose.

“He was the only one who could help me. Norma and Connor are taking care of Murphy. I needed help to storm the castle, and Pierre was the only man I could trust.”

“Where are we?”

He grinned. “I wasn’t running completely out of control through the woods. There was method to my madness. The rendezvous point with Pierre isn’t far.” He laced his fingers with mine, and a warm flutter started in the depths of my belly as my beast stirred.

Walking through the woods under the moonlight, I could pretend we were a normal couple of lovers, meeting for a romantic promenade. That my clothes weren’t soaked in blood. The scenes of the massacre didn’t flash through my mind. That we weren’t going to stop a crazy plan to start a war.

Roy trekked through tall ferns and bushes of stinging nettles in the dim light of the moon. Owls cried from somewhere at our passage. Rats and mice scurried away from us, and the rumble of a river echoed through the trees. Cold air sneaked up my ripped skirt. After the adrenaline of the chase waned, I trembled, my knees buckling.

“It’s all right.” Roy pulled me closer, an arm around my waist. “We’re nearly there.”

“It’s just…it was all so scary.”

“You’ll feel better soon. I promise.”

We hiked for another fifteen minutes among the cries of nocturnal birds and my chattering teeth. At least no noise came from the direction of the castle. The Nazis weren’t after us yet.

“Pierre,” Roy said, pausing in the middle of a trail. “It’s me.”

“Finally. I was starting to think your plan of getting yourself captured was too foolish to work.” The blond Frenchman came out from behind the trees. He flashed a charming smile when he saw me, not focusing on my ripped clothes or all the blood, as if I were wearing a decent evening dress. “Kristin,ma cherie.” He hugged me, patting me on the back. “We must stop meeting like this. Us always rescuing you. Although Roy did everything by himself this time.” He cast a quizzical glance at Roy. “How did you do it?”

Roy waved. “Later.”

I let out a nervous chuckle that turned into a sob. “It’s good to see you again, Pierre.”

“Not your blood, I believe.” He frowned, studying me. “It smells all wrong, not sweet and delicious like you.”

Roy growled. “Yes, that’s all nice and good, but there isn’t any reason to hold her like that.” He peeled Pierre’s arms off my body. “Besides, we don’t have time for pleasantries. We have a war to stop.”
