“Yes. Stay away from him.” His upper lip curled. “This isn’t a game.”

Funny, but Roy had said something similar. “What if I can’t stay away from him?”

“If you can’t, then you should be prepared to face the consequences.” He leaned closer. “Are you ready?”

I opened my mouth to say ‘yes,’ when Gladys and Doris walked towards us.

“There you are.” Carrying a couple of steamy mugs and my boots, Gladys stood in front of me. Her gaze shifted from me to Connor, brightening. “Hullo. I’m Gladys, and this is Doris.”

“Nice to meet you, sir.” Doris lifted her cup of mulled wine in a greeting.

Connor stood up, removing his felt hat. “Ladies, I’m Connor. It’s my fault if Kristin has disappeared. We know each other, and I kept her here to chat.”

Chat my foot. He was interrogating me. Brilliant idea I had.

“No worries.” Gladys flashed a smile. “Would you like to join us?”

“I’m afraid I have to go. Duty calls.” Bowing his head, Connor glanced at me. “Remember what I told you, Kristin.” Smiling at my friends, he sauntered away, a hand on the lapels of his coat.

Gladys smacked her tongue. “Bloody hell, Kristin, you’re meeting some dashing men since you work in that mysterious place of yours.”

Dashing but dangerous. And impossible. I snatched my boots from her hands. “I hope you put some vodka in my mulled wine.”
