2. Meeting

ON LEGS THAT were still shaking from the onslaught of desire moments earlier, I walked the rest of the distance to Allen’s office in silence. Roy’s arm brushed mine, sending electric jolts along my body. His presence stroked my skin, enveloped me, as if he were hugging me. That was one of the side effects of merging with another beast. A connection was created and couldn’t be broken easily. The bond between us allowed me to sense his presence when he was around and sometimes when he wasn’t. Not entirely pleasant, especially since he kept denying us the pleasure we could share.

Commander Allen’s door was a thick wooden plank that resembled a drawbridge and wouldn’t be out of place in a medieval castle. I knocked on the door, mentally rehearsing what I wanted to say about the situation in Berlin. My scattered thoughts didn’t want to cooperate. They turned around Roy and his touch. Now I understood his constant need to be in control. We’d been about to have sex in the middle of the corridor. The meeting with Allen might determine the role of Raven Park in preventing a war, and here I was, all hot and bothered because I wanted to shag my mentor, feeling like a bitch in heat. I bit the inside of my cheek to regain control of myself.

Wrapped in a tight pencil skirt, the secretary, Miss Hammond, opened the door and flashed her red-lipstick smile. “Kristin, Roy, take a seat.” Her blonde hair was twisted in a practical chignon, but a few tendrils were left loose to frame her pretty face.

The waiting room preserved the medieval style with its sturdy furniture and leather sofas. If the effect was meant to intimidate, it did a good job. The radio, telephone, and typewriter on a desk ruined the ancient atmosphere.

I perched on the edge of the sofa, avoiding Roy’s gaze on purpose. If we stared at each other, who knew what I might do to him on this sofa. Although, he’d probably already dismissed the whole incident and the following conversation. Well, sort of conversation. Discussions with Roy tended to be one-sided. I complained, he rolled his eyes and didn’t talk while grunting for a while. We were the perfect married couple.

He coughed in his closed fist. “I need to talk to you after we see Allen,” he said, putting the folder aside.

“About what?” I glanced at Miss Hammond who was busy typing. “About what happened?” Or didn’t happen.

Good Lord, was that a flush on his cheeks? Had I made him blush?

“I’ll tell you later.” He focused on the documents again. “It depends on how the meeting with Allen goes.”

Minutes passed. Roy’s closeness was torture and bliss at the same time. Perhaps I shouldn’t waste my time hoping things between us would change. But why couldn’t we be together without the commitment to marry each other? It was the ruddy twentieth century. Having a shag with a man didn’t mean I had to marry him. Afterwards, he could do whatever he wanted because I wouldn’t whine over him, become jealous, and—all right. Maybe it wasn’t that simple. This…thing between us was raw, strong, and was sinking deeper into my flesh the more time we spent together. A quick tumble wouldn’t be enough. Nor a long one. I pressed my thighs together as an ache throbbed between my legs.

“What are you thinking?” Roy asked, lowering the document he was reading. “I sense a certain tension from you.” His gaze dropped to my lap, but only for a second.

Dammit. “About our conversation and your stubbornness.”

He opened his mouth, surely to tell me to be reasonable, but then shut it again when Miss Hammond rose from her chair.

“Kristin,” she said, adjusting her glasses. “Just a reminder that you’ll need your shot of Eros soon.”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. Every few months, we had to take a shot of a drug that kept our beasts under control in case they went berserk. The scientists at the mill knew better than I did what was best for us, but for some reason, every time the darn shot was mentioned, the hairs behind my neck prickled. “I will go to see the nurse today.”

“Excellent. The commander will see you now.” She pushed the door of the commander’s office inward.

Right. Focus, Kristin.

Allen stood up when we entered. His large, square face added a layer of harshness to his figure. His glacial blue eyes seared us down with the surgical precision of a sniper who was searching for the best spot to hit. They also marked him as human. The fact that he wasn’t a beast was one of the many signs that the Ministry of Defence didn’t trust a beast to be in command. The beasts were no more than objects—weapons at the ministry’s disposal. It’d been a year since I’d learned that, but not being considered a person still hurt.

“Commander.” Roy’s tone was arctic as well.

If the rumour was true, then Kenneth had already given his opinion to Allen about our conspiracy theory on the Nazis.

“Condottiero, Kristin, please take a seat.” Allen nodded at the couple of chairs in front of his dark desk. “I’m glad that what happened in Berlin didn’t leave any permanent damage on you, Kristin.”

Physical no. Psychological yes.

The night of horror in Berlin had robbed me of my innocence, showing me what people could do to other people for no reason. Nothing could give that naivety back to me. Also—I shot a glance at Roy—during that week, I experienced an orgasm for the first time, thanks to the condottiero next to me. Another little piece of my innocence gone, but I wouldn’t mourn that loss.

“Are you all right, Kristin?” Allen asked, steepling his fingers together.

“We suffered minor injuries,” I said, shifting my weight on the chair. When two beasts formed a bond through the merging, they acquired the ability to heal each other…using their saliva, which meant lips, tongues, and kisses. Lots of kisses. Being healed by Roy had been the most pleasant type of healing of my life. My skin still tingled at the memory of his lips on my body.

“The important thing is that you’re back,” Allen said, somehow not sounding concerned for us.

“I trust you read the report I sent you.” Roy didn’t believe in pleasantries.

Allen’s square face turned towards him. “I have. I found it interesting.”

“Interesting?” Roy cocked a brow.
