“I’m not sure I can do anything that pleases me with it. It seems that it slips through my fingers every time I try to grasp it.”

The intensity of his stare had me shaking. “It belongs to you. It’s yours. Forever. Or for as long as you want it.”

I closed my hand around the pendant. “It’s the most precious thing I have, and I mean to treasure it, no matter what.”

We stared at each other until the sound of the cadets laughing in the corridor broke the spell.

“The key?” he asked.

“It’s not here.”

“Bloody hell.” Roy plonked down onto the bed, his chin on his closed fist. “Who could have taken it?”

“Peggy sleeps here. Clare has access to this room through the bathroom. The cleaners come in here. But I can’t believe any of them did it.” Although Peggy didn’t have any sympathy for Roy, but what would she need from his room? “Have you reported the incident?”

“Yes. Allen has ordered a search of the manor, but I doubt we’ll find any clues. No one saw anything. Whoever searched my room was careful enough to not be spotted or leave traces.” He ran a hand through his hair, messing it up.

I shifted my weight. “What do you think it means?”

“It’s the beginning.” He rose, ending up a few inches from me, his clean, soapy scent filling the air.

“The beginning?”

The deep stirring within me meant his beast was still in turmoil. Everyone close to him gets burned, Peggy had said. It was true. He was a flame, and I was burning for him.

He lifted his hand, fingertips hovering over my cheek. But then he lowered it, balling his fist at his side. “Keep your eyes open.”

With that, he strode out of the room, his inner chaos echoing inside me.
