“What do you need me to do?” Roy asked, every inch the condottiero even in that dull grey outfit.

“Keep your eyes open.” The commander pinned him with a hard glare. “The Ministry of Defence sent an external team of investigators. The minister doesn’t trust us with leading the inquiry. Even the Secretary of State for War doesn’t trust us. I can’t blame them. I see shadows everywhere. Anyone could be the traitor. But I don’t trust the ministry either. The investigators won’t tell me anything, leaving me in the dark. But I do trust you.”

“Thank you, sir.” Roy bowed his head.

“Report only to me.” Allen gritted his teeth. For a moment, his tired face turned sharp and determined.

If he’d included me in his circle of trust, he didn’t clarify it. I took it for granted, although I wasn’t sure what Roy was supposed to do.

The commander slouched back on his chair, huffing like a kettle running out of steam, suddenly tired. “I need your help, Condottiero,” he whispered, staring at the eerie glow of the burning mill. “You know what to do. You know how to do it.” Without waiting for Roy’s reply, he waved a hand towards the door.

Roy gave a quick bow before heading out.

“Are we working together again for this mission?” I asked, after we left Allen’s office.

“It’s not a real mission. Allen asked us to keep our eyes open.”

Us. I loved that word. “Yes, but I know you’ll do more than that. We’ll do more than that.”

He paused in the hallway, staring out of the window at the distant flames glowing with an eerie blue colour. “Yes. We’ll do more than that.”
