She tossed the book aside. “I’ve replaced a stock of Eros with a harmless vitamin shot.”

“Peggy!”

“I know, I know.” She held up her hands. “The plan was that I would be the only one to receive the fake Eros shot, but something went wrong when I was in the dispensary and the darn bomb went off. In the midst of the chaos, I lost track of the stock I’d tampered with, and now I don’t know where it is.”

“So there are people who aren’t going to receive their Eros shot, but only vitamins.”

She nodded, her eyes watering again. “If I’m wrong, and the Eros does help us, then I put a few lives in danger. It could be you.”

“Blimey.” I rubbed my forehead. “Do you remember the serial number of the stock?”

“I wrote it down on a piece of paper, but I can’t find it. It was in my pocket when I was in the dispensary, but after I came out and started helping the nurses, I forgot about it. When I checked it again, it was gone.” Her voice rose to a crescendo, a hysterical note ringing in it. “That’s why I was crying.” She sobbed again.

“All right. All right. We can deal with this.” I took her shoulders. “Tomorrow, we’ll go to the hospital wing and search the dispensary and every room you’ve been in, and we’ll keep searching until we find something.”

Cheeks flushing a deep crimson, she nodded. “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet.” I clapped her shoulder, wondering how the heck we were going to get out of such a mess.
