things once in a while. My dad would never make me a grilled

cheese or mac and cheese or a normal pizza. I’ve told you that.

If the dinner doesn’t turn out to be five courses long, I’m good

“I don’t know if I am,” Amy sniffed, but she was smiling.

“It would be a rare treat for me.”

“As long as pate isn’t included.” Elva was really stuck on

that point. One would think that she detested the stuff or

something.

They were interrupted by footsteps in the hall. Haley held

her breath as Jenny appeared, then Claire closely behind her.

She’d approved her friends coming over with Claire ahead of

time, but she was still nervous about them meeting her. She

was nervous about what Elva and Amy would think of her

reaction to them meeting Claire. Would they be able to tell that

there was something going on between them? Would Jenny be

able to tell? Oh God, did Jenny already know? Haley flushed,

which she was sure was a dead giveaway. She wished her skin

wasn’t so fair and didn’t betray every single one of her

emotions at every turn.

Sure enough, Elva’s eyes shot to Haley’s face, and she

studied her carefully, but then she was captivated by

something else. Someone else. And it wasn’t the mysterious

Claire Finley that her friends had been wondering about the

whole time. Elva’s eyes shot to Jenny’s face and locked there.

She tensed, going completely and almost unnaturally still.
