“Why did you come back here, Coralyn? You could have

just gone to your apartment. If you wanted to be alone, you

could have gone there. You didn’t have to bring the car back.

You knew you didn’t.” She was pressing. Too rough. Too

much. She needed to do it.

“I did,” Coralyn bit back furiously, all claws and teeth. “I

had to bring it back. I had to tell you that this isn’t going to

work.”

“No. That’s not why you came back here.” It was in the air

between them, the real intent, shimmering, just out of reach,

wild and hard. They were both raw. Both chafing against the

other. “I want you to tell me why you really came here.”

“I just did!”

“You came here because you didn’t want to be alone. You

didn’t want to go back to your silent apartment and shower

and change and go back to the hospital. You don’t want to be

alone when it happens. You don’t want to be alone after.”

“What I want doesn’t matter. I want my dad to be healthy

and alive and the universe is taking him anyway.”

“I know. And you’re angry about that. You want to rage

about that. Let it out. You can do that. You don’t have to be

perfect. You don’t have to pretend that everything is fine when

it’s not. You can let it go. Cry. Scream. Whatever you need.”

She shouldn’t be pushing her so hard, but she sensed that

Coralyn was reaching a breaking point, and that this was truly

what she needed. She needed her there with her. She didn’t

need to be alone. She didn’t need to walk away. She didn’t

need them to break apart when they needed to be together. “I

want it,” Giana whispered. “Anything you have to give. I’m
