She pushed it all away, reasoning that it meant nothing. She
was just being helpful. She needed the money, but she wasn’t
heartless. If someone like Andi was in the same boat or had a
problem and needed a place to crash for a few days, Dani
would have helped her out too. This might be something she’d
never done before, but it wasn’t a special case. She was just
being nice.
It just made sense for her to offer Emily a place to stay for a
few more days. This was logical. Plus, Dani couldn’t stand
hypocritical, senseless, heartless, cruel people. The world was
full of them. If Emily could change her parents’ minds, then
there’d be two less, possibly one who would be senator. That
would be good for the whole state. She didn’t need to be
emotionally attached to any of it. She wouldn’t be. Dani
promised herself she wouldn’t let any of it touch her heart.
Emotion was something she knew how to shut down or
even cut out of herself if she had to. She’d done it her whole
life. She’d go with the facts and stick with that because that’s
what made sense. Besides, she had more to worry about than
Emily. She had a store to save or a new building to find. There
would be plenty of things to distract her over the next few
days. Three days wasn’t so long.
Nothing much could happen in three days.
Chapter 13
Emily
Back at Dani’s apartment, Emily got busy putting her art
things away while Dani made mac and cheese. Emily was still
in the living room, piling canvases in the far corner with
plastic sheets to separate them and keep the fronts safe, when
Dani brought a plate in. Emily whipped around.
