hard, and right now, they were firmly fixed on Emily’s face.

The other woman’s expression was absolutely inscrutable.

“Don’t you think we should at least be on a first name basis

before you ask me out?” The woman grabbed the deck of tarot

cards and shuffled it some more. Her fingers were long and

tapered. Emily expected her nails to be black, but they were

cut and filed nicely and perfectly natural.

The tone was light and teasing, and finally, those emerald

eyes glinted with a hint of amusement.

Emily felt herself getting warm and flustered. It was more

from embarrassment than attraction, she told herself.

“I’m sorry.” She folded her hands between her knees and

clasped them together so tight they nearly slipped apart

because they were so slick and sweaty. “I shouldn’t have just

said that. I don’t know why I said that.”

One black brow arched. Emily wasn’t sure if it was makeup

or if the other woman’s brows were actually that color. Her

hair was dyed so perfectly, without roots, that it gave no hint at

all.

“I mean, I do. I do know why I said it,” Emily corrected.

“It’s not what you think. I’m sorry. I need…the thing is, I need

a fake wife and I’m willing to pay.”

That got the other woman’s attention. This time, her lips

twitched and then she smiled. It actually reached her sharp,

high cheekbones. “Oh really?”

“Oh my god.” Emily wrenched her hands free and hid her

face in them. “Can you forget that I just said that. Actually, I

think I’m going to go now. Like. Right. Now.” Emily snatched

her bag and pushed back the chair.

“No!”
