Emily’s yellow sundress, not the one she’d worn into the store

that first time Dani had seen her, fit her perfectly. It was

adorable and flowy, baring just enough of her creamy skin, a

hint of cleavage, and tucking in to emphasize a tiny waist. The

dress was knee length, leaving an impressive amount of

Emily’s long, sleek legs on display.

She caught Dani studying her when she stood, setting the

pen down on the table, and she smiled. It was too real. Too

genuine. It caught Dani off guard, and she was rarely taken by

surprise. Emily’s cornflower blue eyes burned with emotion

and Dani found her heart racing. She wiped her palms down

her dress nervously. Dani crossed her arms and glared back,

disturbed by how easily Emily could rattle her just by, what,

smiling?

Maybe it had something to do with being fake married. That

was enough to throw anyone off their game.

They walked out of the courthouse, a group of four. Emily’s

friends took Emily’s hands like she wasn’t a big enough girl to

find her own way out. Dani trailed behind them in a wake of

expensive perfume, airy dresses, and flawless makeup. She’d

done her own makeup as per usual. Heavy on the black, smoky

eyes and scarlet lips. She’d straightened her dark hair until it

hung down in a glossy raven curtain nearly to her waist.

“Oh my gosh, Em, I’m so happy for you!” Purple Dress One

hugged Emily as soon as they made their exit back into the

unrelenting sunshine, the regular for a NOLA summer day.

“Yeah, me too.” Purple Dress Two got in on the group hug.

Uh, they do know this is fake, right?

Speaking of fake, it never came up that Dani was also a
