suits coming and going. Dani swore she’d never seen so many

pants suits in her life. Or did they call them power suits? Was

that an eighties or nineties term?

“I guess I should let Dani get back to work.” Apparently,

Emily hadn’t forgotten that Dani was still there. She turned

with a genuine smile that made Dani’s stomach feel like she’d

eaten a swarm of locusts for breakfast.

She didn’t like the feeling. She didn’t like it at all. She’d

had that sensation before, usually before she got told to pack

her few things into a garbage bag because she was being

moved again. That flutter meant hope, and generally after,

hope getting crushed because it was never worth having in the

first place.

“Yeah.” She picked up a strand of hair and toyed with it,

twirling it around her index finger. Her left index finger. The

gold band with the tiny diamonds set into it flashed in the

sunlight, reminding her that she was married. Freaking

officially.

Married was one thing Dani never thought that she’d be.

She felt overwhelmed just thinking the word. She wanted to

ask Emily what the plan was now, but she also wanted to wait

until they were alone. Purple Dresses soon got the hint,

hugged Emily again, because apparently hugs were going out

of style, and sauntered off down the sidewalk together.

Dani didn’t ask Emily how she knew her friends. She didn’t

want to know, and she wasn’t polite enough to waste time on

social niceties that she didn’t believe in. She’d never cared if

people thought she was rude.

The twinge in her chest told her that maybe she cared what

Emily thought, and she didn’t like that. She didn’t know why
