“You’ve hurt your mother with your careless words,” Peter

cut in, jumping to his wife’s defense. “I won’t have you acting

like a spoiled brat who thinks she can walk all over us this

way. You’ve done this out of spite. You’ve done it so that you

have leverage at the table, so that you can bargain with it. I

won’t have it. You will fill out the law school applications.

You’ll drop this notion of being an artist. Your accounts will

continue to be frozen because it’s obvious you can’t be trusted

to make good, stable decisions with that money. You’ll allow

me to help you get this marriage annulled and you won’t talk

about it again.”

Emily leaped off the couch. She wasn’t actually mad, just

beyond frustrated. She was so, so frustrated. “I’m not getting it

annulled,” she seethed. “And if you won’t help me, either of

you, then tomorrow, my wedding photos will be on my social

media page. Don’t bother trying to get them shut down. I’ll

make sure she posts on hers if you do, and if you try to shut

her down, I’ll get my friends to post them next. I’ll make sure

it’s all very, very public. I’ll make sure everyone knows that

my mom won’t support me and my father, a possible future

senator, is ashamed of his daughter’s sexual orientation.”

Emily had no intention of doing any of it, but she left the

threat hanging there. The tension and anger in the room were

palpable. Emily inhaled the bitter scent of it with every ragged

breath. “I’m going to pack a bag and I’m going to her place.

I’m not coming back until you text me that you’re ready to

talk. Not bargain. Talk. Together. Until you can respect me.”

“We can’t respect you when you do things like this,” Peter

snapped. “You’ve treated your mother and me terribly. You
