come up with a game plan and Dani was the best bet.

She’d give Emily advice because she wanted her money.

It wasn’t a pretty thing to realize, and it certainly didn’t

make her feel good, but it was the truth.

At the very worst, Emily could spend a miserable night in

her car. Unless her parents reported it stolen. Then she really

didn’t know what she’d do.

Maybe the whole thing would have been better if I smiled.

What’s so wrong with smiling?

She wasn’t ready to give up before she even tried. There

were still plenty of options to exhaust. She consoled herself as

she drove out of the driveway and down the street. She wasn’t

nearly on her last leg yet. She had a long way to go, and she

wasn’t giving up. Her mother liked to constantly remind her

that she was a Radcliffe, and Radcliffes were tough. She was

tough. She wasn’t scared at all about leaving her parent’s

house while everyone was angry, and everything was a mess.

Not one little bit.

Chapter 8

Dani

When Dani opened the back door to find Emily standing at

the top of the wooden stairs that led from the back alley beside

the shop up to the apartment’s door, she let out a low whistle.

Emily looked wrecked. Her hair was thin and limp. She was

still wearing the yellow sundress, but it looked wilted now, not

happy and sunshiny. Her eyes were red rimmed and there were

dark smudges under them, like she hadn’t slept well, even

though there hadn’t been a night between when they’d seen

each other last.

“Geez. It went that well, huh?” Dani tried to be sympathetic.
