for Adalynn to duck out, just like she’d stopped and
backtracked in Vegas.
Cassia snatched her soggy sweater off the floor and
marched upstairs towards her room. She’d shower up there,
change, and go to bed. She wasn’t put off by Adalynn’s urge to
run away right when things got heated. Cassia had thought
about Adalynn for six months and then her accident, which
could also be called fate or something prettier if a person
believed in that kind of thing, had put her back in her life. This
time, she wasn’t letting her get away so easily. Next time,
she’d make sure Adalynn’s phone was off.
Cassia had always liked a challenge. She liked a mystery,
something she could unwrap and puzzle out. Something that
wasn’t easily attainable and meaningless. Adalynn was all of
those things. She said she wanted to be strong, but she kept
running away. She’d told Cassia that she wanted to try to be
brave, and then she took the easy way out. Change wasn’t easy
for anyone, and Adalynn had a lot at stake, but what good was
living your life to please other people?
