have wanted to bury her fingers in that tangled hair to muss it

further.

She still wanted to kiss away the shadows lingering under

Cassia’s eyes. They were dead flat, closed off because Cassia

was already preparing herself for the hurt she felt was

imminent.

Adalynn wished she could have talked to Cassia last night.

She wished she could have immediately reassured her, but

she’d spent all night battling with herself.

She would talk to her now. She would do her very best to

make things right the same way she’d started with that video.

“Eggs?” Adalynn slid the pan off the burner. She got out

two plates and piled them both with eggs that were somehow

burnt and runny at the same time. It was her usual morning

specialty.

“Uh, thanks.” Cassia sat down at the table when Adalynn

set the plates there. She poured coffee and put two mugs on

the table. She even got out orange juice too. She wasn’t sure

she could eat anything as her stomach tightly clenched, and

not from hunger.

Before Cassia could say anything, Adalynn set her phone on

the table between them. Adalynn felt the tension, but she also

felt the bubble of hope that crept into her chest, painful but

gloriously wonderful too.

“I know I can’t really ask anything of you, but would you

watch something if I put it on for you?”

Cassia’s eyes flicked up. She was puzzled at the change in

Adalynn. It was weird to ask her to watch a video on her

phone the morning after they’d basically had a serious break

the night before. Not that they were broken. Yet. Adalynn
