“Your suggestions that I married Pierre just to advance my

career, for the fame, or for the money are quite tedious and

show little respect for his career, his work, or his judgment.”

Amanda’s dark green eyes narrowed. “Even the soundest of

men can be led around by their…well. A pretty face. They can

be misled. Tricked. Duped.”

“We were married for ten years.”

“A union that produced no children.”

Adalynn crossed her arms. Her sleek black dress flexed with

the movement. She imagined removing one black pump from

her foot and smacking the smug, young, junkyard journalist

smack dab in the middle of the forehead, hard enough that

she’d have to walk out of there with the im

print of a designer

label branded into her skin. As amusing as the thought was,

Adalynn refused to let her mirth show.

“With a gruelling schedule that took us all over the world, to

some of the remotest, most inhospitable, dangerous places, to

shoot, we had little chance to plan for a family. Neither of us

was willing to bring a child into such extremes. It would have

been irresponsible and reckless.”

Adalynn wasn’t sure why she even dignified the question

with a response. She should have just sat coldly. She didn’t

have to justify her life to a grasping recent college grad hungry

to make a name for herself. It was ironic, as that’s exactly

what she’d just been accused of being. Minus the college grad

bit. She’d never done more than a year.

Amanda grinned like she expected that answer and was

amused that Adalynn had given her such a token response,

walking straight into the trap she was setting. It was obvious.
