that she’d like to be brave enough to make it real, hadn’t lasted past the
point where her thoughts turned into action.
She knew how painful it was to feel all alone when those relationships
ended and she was the one hurt. She couldn’t imagine having no one to fall
back on. At the same time, it was lonely and painful to have to live her life
like this.
“I can’t imagine what you’re thinking and feeling right now,” Romi
whispered. “I mean, I can. Kind of.”
Kiera wasn’t aware that she’d set her fork down and that her hand was
resting on the table top until Romi reached out and covered it with hers.
Kiera actually gasped. Her eyes flew up and when she saw the tenderness in
Romi’s eyes, she relaxed her fingers and left her palm pressed to the table.
“It’s okay, Kiera. Whatever you decide. I thought after what happened that
we’d have to avoid each other and things would be weird. I thought that I
might even have to quit. But then I really thought about it. I could either be
hurt and think of myself as a victim or write off what happened as a bad
decision, or I could be there.”
“I…” Kiera had no idea what she actually wanted to say, so she pressed
her lips tightly together and lapsed back into silence.
“You don’t have to make a decision now. Or ever. I just wanted you to
know that I’m here. I’m here as a friend. I do think that…” Romi’s throat
bobbed hard. “I just think that if we want to be more than that, then we need
an understanding in place. I don’t want to get hurt again and I know you
don’t either.”
“Yes,” Kiera agreed.
“I don’t want to just walk around confused and have this massive mess
going on. If you want a relationship, then I’m open to talking about it. I
