is the right way. I mean, not your family. I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I know. They’re not like that. They would never actually say anything
about anyone. Nothing mean like that, or cruel. They don’t believe in hating
other people. I guess they’re just old fashioned. I’ve never really heard
them express their opinions, I just know it. It’s hard to explain.”
“I get it. They’re your family. You know them best.”
“Yeah. I suppose.”
“I know what you said before too, on the weekend. About being hurt
before. I’ve been hurt too. I make the mistake of falling in love with people
and giving them all of myself and then I get hurt when that’s not enough. I
don’t try to make people love me or anything. I keep picking the wrong
ones. People who are bad for me. People who aren’t going to work out.”
“Do I fit into that category?”
“No!” Romi let out a breath when she saw a flash in Kiera’s eyes and
realized that she was just joking. “No. You don’t. Honestly, you’re not like
anyone I’ve ever met before.”
“Is that good or bad?”
“
Good. I can’t believe we’re even sitting here talking. I thought there was
no way I’d ever be able to tell you how I felt. Or do, well, anything more
than that.” Romi knew she was blushing and she ducked her head. She
pulled her hand away slowly and picked up her fork. She realized that her
food was beyond cold. “Should I warm yours up?” She looked at the
microwave instead. It was hers, so at least it worked.
“Oh. Sure. I feel like I could actually eat now.”
“Were you that nervous?”
“I was.”
“I was too.”
Romi slid out of her seat. She heated Kiera’s plate first, then hers. When
she sat back down, she felt like her face was no longer a thousand degrees.
