Kiera took the mug from Romi’s hand. Her face was soft. Softer than
Romi had ever seen it before. “I don’t.” She leaned in and pressed her lips
gently to her forehead. “And I don’t.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
“I’ll see you later, then.”
“Yes. I promise I’m not going anywhere.”
“Neither am I.”
They both stood there for a minute, just staring at each other, enjoying
the fact that they were now together. That they mattered to each other and
that they both knew it. That there were no more secrets between them, no
more unresolved tension. The wanting was still there, the desire, but it was
different. It didn’t feel secret or illicit anymore. It felt transformative.
Romi ended up walking Kiera to the door and letting her out. After she
locked it, she leaned hard against it. She always set her alarm with lots of
time to spare, just in case something happened on the way to work, traffic
or other unexpected delays. She had time, so she gave herself a few extra
minutes just to revel in everything that had happened since the day before.
