forward with her own family, she had no right to hope to move forward
with Romi.
It hurt to think about telling her that. To think about breaking up with her
because she very well deserved better. It hurt so much that tears leaked out
of the corners of Kiera’s eyes. It hurt like her chest was being split in half
and the rest of her body was being turned inside out.
But that didn’t change that Romi needed to know. She needed to know
that she could and would do better. She needed Kiera to be able to let her go
so that she could move on. Kiera needed to do it because she cared about
Romi, and if you cared about someone, you wanted what was best for them.
She knew that she more than cared, so it was the right thing to do.
She was in love with Romi, but sometimes love just wasn’t enough.
Sometimes it wasn’t enough to stand up to real life. Maybe that meant that
her love wasn’t strong enough. Maybe it meant that she herself was flawed.
Kiera knew she could probably debate it with herself forever, but ultimately
it meant one thing and one thing only.

Romi
When Kiera texted her to come over, Romi hoped for the best. She knew
Kiera had dinner with her family the night before. When she walked in the
door and saw Kiera’s grim expression, she could tell right away that
something was wrong.
