A few hours later, Wade left the store much happier than when he’d
walked in. The guys were happy to have had something to occupy their
afternoon with and Romi felt completely satisfied with the progress she’d
made. Wade’s area looked great. It was a total transformation, and when
Wynn and Kiera went up to take a look after Wade left, they both came
down, stunned.
“I never thought I’d see the day,” Wynn said, grinning at her in a
mystified sort of way.
When Kiera recovered from her surprise, she didn’t actually look overly
pleased. In fact, she gave Romi a strange look that she couldn’t decode. It
made her feel weird. Like she’d done something wrong, but it had nothing
to actually do with Wade or his newly arranged vendor a
rea. She was
confused by it, and felt the same heat creeping up in her chest that always
took over whenever Kiera looked her way.
“I’ve arranged a pick for Friday,” Kiera said simply, changing the
subject, like Wade’s area, a minor miracle, hadn’t happened at all. “Wynn
said you’re interested and I think it’s a good opportunity to train, seeing as
it shouldn’t be too intensive. Can I change the schedule?”
Romi felt a mounting sense of excitement, even if Kiera’s words were
said completely grudgingly, like she didn’t want to actually take her along.
It wasn’t just the thought of going on her first pick, which was exciting in
itself, but the thought of going with Kiera. Being alone with her. Driving
with her. Going through piles of stuff side by side.
Romi knew it wasn’t appropriate and tried to stifle the feeling, but the
anticipation rose into her throat and nearly choked her. All she could do was
nod, since she didn’t trust herself to speak.
“Good. We can meet in the store’s parking lot at seven and get on the
road. You’ll be riding with me, since I’ll have the truck and the trailer. Does
that work?”
