Megan turned her head to look at her, her face radiant with a smile.

“I’d like that,” she said.

Then, at the exact same time, both Vanessa and Megan said, “But there’s something I should tell you.”

They both burst into wide-eyed laughter. Megan even reached out to place her hand briefly on Vanessa’s arm. Vanessa thrilled at the touch.

“You first,” Megan insisted.

“Okay.” Vanessa took a moment before continuing. She had to make sure that what she was about to say didn’t come off the wrong way. The last thing she wanted was to seem like some kind of female Casanova, only looking for a quick lay. But she also wanted to be honest with Megan. “We should totally hang out sometime but I should warn you that I’m hardly a candidate for a relationship.”

Megan quirked an eyebrow.

Vanessa went on.

“You see, my coffeeshop literally keeps a roof over my head and it takes up a lot of my physical, mental and emotional energy. I mean, even when I’m not at La Vida Mocha, I’m thinking about La Vida Mocha. And with this fucking pandemic…” Vanessa shook her head.

“I totally get it,” Megan said. Vanessa felt relieved because when Megan said she totally got it, she sounded like she totally got it, and not like she was just saying so.

“Are you sure?”

“Totally.”

“So, what’s your thing?” Vanessa inquired.

“My thing is that I’ll be moving to New York soon.”

Vanessa’s mouth dropped open in shock. She hadn’t expected that.

“When?”

Megan’s brow furrowed.

“That’s still an open question,” she said. “BeachSoft plans to open an office there and I’m to head it up. It’s actually a big promotion and I suppose if Covid wasn’t around I would have moved there already. Anyway, the CEO of my company says she wants me there by the end of the year regardless, so, I’m not exactly looking for anything…”

“Lasting?” Vanessa offered.

Megan smiled.

“Exactly.”

Vanessa sucked her bottom lip between her teeth. Was it really possible that this gorgeous creature standing in front of her was open to the casual, no-strings-attached type of fling that she herself wanted?

“Are you doing anything tomorrow?” Vanessa asked.

“Aren’t you opening your shop tomorrow?”

Vanessa shook her head. “Not on Sundays anymore; at least until these stupid restrictions are lifted and I can hire staff again. It’s bad enough I’m there six days a week.”

“In that case, I’m free tomorrow.”

“Excellent.”

Before they had a chance to make more detailed plans, a new voice interrupted them.

“Did you guys go to fucking France for the wine? Jeez!”
