She shook her head, damning herself for having such thoughts, damning herself even more when she realized that her center was a little slick now.

Must take Morgan to the beach!

She wondered, though, would Morgan be game for such illicit, quasi-exhibitionist play? Or would she think that was something only silly young women did?

Anyway, Sienna was talking…

“I promise I’m not saying this because I miss having you available,” Sienna began, “but what if Morgan’s newfound lesbianism doesn’t stick? I mean, personally, I’d be a little suspicious of any woman that old suddenly deciding she likes women.”

“I don’t know,” Chloë answered truthfully. “I mean, it’ll suck, sure, but what can I do about it?” She then explained to Sienna what Vanessa had told her a couple of weeks ago; that in reality there were countless things that could bring about the end of her relationship with Morgan, therefore, why worry about that one particular thing?

Sienna seemed to consider this and then returned to laying on her back.

“Vanessa is pretty wise,” she said after a moment.

Chloë nodded. “I know, just don’t tell her that, she freaks out.”

“Anyway, after this let’s go get drinks,” Sienna suggested.

“Perfect,” Chloë agreed.

Chapter 28

Driving back from Irvine, Morgan thought about her day thus far, particularly how close she had come to spilling the beans.

It had been while she was having lunch with her mother who, as always and as if she were playing the role of Nosy Mother in a silly sitcom, asked her single daughter if she was seeing anybody.

Wanting to minimize the lying, Morgan had said yes, she was seeing someone but that it was early days yet and she didn’t want to say too much about it just now. All of which was true, after all. However, she had felt a brief flash of courage in her gut that almost—almost—made her confess that the person she was seeing was a woman but just at that instant the waitress had arrived with their lunches and the moment passed.

Her mother was delighted, as Morgan knew she would be, and fortunately they had moved on to discussing other things and then had spent the rest of their time together not mentioning Morgan’s love life.

But Morgan knew that the conversation was inevitable and that it was becoming more and more inevitable with each passing day, because the fact was, Morgan wanted to continuing seeing Chloë. Like a teenage girl—which she hasn’t been in a long time—Morgan knew that this coming Saturday would mark three whole weeks that she and Chloë have been together. That’s nearly a month, she considered. Nearly a month of not only dating the same person, but dating a woman.

Yep! Gonna have to tell Mom and Dad someday!

But she wasn’t going to stress about that now, not on a gorgeous day like this.

It was almost four p.m. and Morgan was driving on the I-5, getting close to Carlsbad. Surprisingly, traffic wasn’t terrible, allowing her to zip along the highway with her window and sunroof both open, singing along to her favorite K-pop group—her secret pleasure.

She was hoping Chloë would want to come

over tonight. Over the past couple of weeks, they had started splitting their nights together between their houses. Morgan had gotten over her silly fear of Chloë’s parents hearing them having sex, and so far, she hadn’t encountered Chloë’s father again at the tiny house, nor had she even seen Chloë’s mother, though from what Chloë told her, it was her mother who managed to get the garbage disposal working. She was also thinking that she’d take Chloë out for dinner tonight. Yesterday, both of them had admitted to a craving for a good steak and Morgan knew just the place.

Exiting the highway at Carlsbad Village Drive, Morgan would have normally turned left to head to her neighborhood. But she decided that she wanted to pick up some wine for the weekend before going home and since she was so close to her favorite wine store which was downtown in the village she turned right instead.

After a couple of blocks, she was stopped by a traffic light and was casually surveying the people out and about on the sidewalks when she thought she spotted a familiar figure just across the street. She leaned forward on her steering wheel to get a better look and sure enough, it was Chloë. A half-naked Chloë! She was in a bikini top and frayed denim shorts, flip-flops on her feet, carrying a tote bag. She was obviously walking towards the outdoor bar on the corner and…she wasn’t walking alone!

Morgan leaned even closer to the windshield, scrunching her eyes up a bit to tighten their focus.

Sienna! Also half-naked!

Morgan’s mouth fell open at the allure of the tattoo artist’s body. Even from across the street the way the young woman’s bikini top barely contained her round breasts was obvious. And, wow, did Sienna have a nice ass! And, wow, was it shown off nicely in her own pair of cut-off shorts!

The surrealness of how she was checking out another woman as if she’d been doing so all her life was lost to Morgan in the panic which was now rising up inside her.

Why are they together?

At the entrance to the bar, the hostess escorted them to a nearby outdoor table and Morgan watched in horror as Sienna put her hand on the small of Chloë’s back as she let Chloë go ahead of her.
