EVANNA

My senses awoke to the sound of waves stretching over the shore and slowly retreating to the sea. Their melody was like an endless song of peace. The first rays of the sun and the salty air caressed my face while the purest warmth wrapped around me.

Five more minutes.

It felt so serene here, I almost didn’t want to wake up.

Ten more minutes.

My makeshift bed suddenly began to shake and shift underneath me, and as it lifted from the sand, my body crashed onto the grainy terrain.

Ugh! I was going to kill him. Dead.

“Vyper!” I screeched, pushing myself up. A hand rubbed my bare bottom while wiping the sand from my skin. “I was having a good dream, you assface.”

What sounded like a raspy, wheezy chuckle reached me and I stood, placing both hands on my hips. Slowly, the side of the hill before me transformed from grayish-black rock to a mossy green equally bumpy surface, and as one eyelid lifted, a slitted, bright green iris appeared—its pupil almost as big as my head.

“Oh, you think that’s funny, don’t you?” My eyebrows arched in warning, but his eye scrunched up as he cackled again. “Fine, we’ll see how you like it when I go back home with Draco and leave you alone in this horrid place.”

Whirling around, I walked to the boulders at the edge of the sea, where I had left my borrowed clothes drying for the night. I never reached them. The tail I had been nestled in so comfortably a few moments ago, wrapped around my waist and lifted me from the sand. My feet dangled in the air as the Dragon pulled me back until I was squished against his cheek.

A whiny ‘I’m sorry’ sound escaped his throat, and my lips twitched while I tried to repress the smile. Dragon younglings were innocent and incredibly loyal, but they were also crazy mischievous. Especially this one.

“Okay, okay. I love you again.” Extending my arms, I hugged the side of his head, and placed a kiss on his cheek. “Can you put me down now?”

Nodding, Vyper’s tail set me on the sand again, and he began to stretch. Slowly, his arms, legs, tail, and the rest of his body became visible. Using the camouflaging ability he possessed, he let fully go of the rocky appearance that had kept him hidden against the base of the mountain since we arrived.

“Stay low,” I reminded when he attempted to stretch his wings.

My gaze turned to the other hill just as the gravelly formation slowly transformed to grayish-blue scales. Draco’s neck extended lazily while he yawned, his mouth opening so wide it could easily swallow me. Remembering my instructions, he remained low over the earth while his form shook the sleep away, and he blinked, focusing on me.

His lips partly stretched into a darling smile when he saw me, and he nudged my stomach with his nose, silently asking for a hug. His yellow eyes sparkled with love. Kissing his nose, I squeezed him—well, what I could reach of him, and walked out of his way. Draco was the sweetheart of the two—always eager to please—while Vyper was, simply put, an ass.

The sharp talons of their wings began to carve out channels as they dragged themselves along the shore to the bay, and I wanted to smack them.

“Stop it!” I whisper-hissed at them, erasing the evidence with my feet.

Whining, they both picked up their wings—Draco folding them onto his back like a good boy, while Vyper extended them fully into the incoming waves. He was testing my patience today, and I was going to kick him so hard.

The two slid seamlessly into the water for their morning bath, diving under the surface not to be seen. My gaze immediately swept the entire area, and the long, rocky trail that led to the top roads, making sure we weren’t visible. Luckily, the heavy and chilly fog that made this the perfect hiding spot, was still sweeping above us and wrapping along the large, red iron bridge that extended to the other side of the land.

Its misty cover didn’t exactly reach the solitary beach that sat under said bridge, except for a few wafting clouds that made their way from the water to the sand. Yet, it hid us fully from the strange civilization above us, and that was all we needed…

For now.

With one last glance, I confirmed no one could be found around us, and a breath of relief left my chest. Even if the sunrise had barely just begun, and the boys were only younglings, we couldn’t risk any one from this world noticing their presence here.

The last thing I needed was for mass hysteria to ensue, I already had enough with the chaos back home.

Sighing, I walked into the water as well.

“Cold, cold, cold!” My entire form shuddered, and I dove under the surface.

After the initial shock of the temperature, I rinsed the granules of sand from my blond hair thoroughly. When I stepped onto the boulder at the edge of the beach, I glanced back to the sea to find four slitted eyes on me—they were the only thing you could see of the kids’ large bodies.

The air trembled with the sound of the horns that suddenly erupted from above us, and I immediately dreaded what that meant. My head whirled around to see both Vyper and Draco peak out of the surface, mouths open wide as they began to imitate the horns.
