“It’s okay,” he assured, taking a napkin and wiping his face. “It figures, I finally found a girl I like, and all she does is spit on me. Literally,” he mumbled to himself.

“I didn’t mean to, I—” My heart began to race with the realization. “Wait, you like me? Like me,like me,asa woman?”

His eyes widened in embarrassment when he realized I had heard him, but he sighed, unwilling to apologize for it. “I do. Is that okay?”

Was it? Was that what was going on between us? Thechemistryhe mentioned was there because I liked him? Gods, I liked him, liked him,the way a woman did a man. Oh, no. No, no, no. I had way too many things to worry about already. I was never pairing with a man. Not if I could help it.

Abruptly standing, I stepped out of the small structure, leaving the food behind me. My stomach practically cried.

My feet halted when Braxton appeared before me, blocking my path. “Stop running away, kay?” he whispered, eyes filled with need and frustration.

“This is not a good idea, Braxton… I’m leaving tonight.”

Sighing as though the knowledge weighed on him, he nodded. “Right. But that still gives us the rest of the afternoon.” A roguish grin replaced the frustration in him. “Do you want to go somewhere with me?”

“Yes,” I answered before I could even think.

What in the gods’ name was I doing?
