“She does. She feels terrible for losing control when the two of you were having such a good day, and I think seeing you again would truly lift her spirits.”
My silence was her answer. I wasn’t sure if I should go or not.
“Listen, Braxton. I know you worry your presence might trigger her, but she’s been well andpresentsince then, so I’m sure it’s okay for you to come.”
Letting out a strained breath, I nodded, considering her words. “Okay. It’s too busy here for me to leave today, but I’ll ask my boss for permission to visit her tomorrow so I can spend at least an hour with her.”
“That sounds wonderful. I’ll tell Keira so she can look forward to that.”
“Thank you.”
Hanging up the phone, I took a glance at myself in the mirror, making sure I was presentable enough to go outside. The Dragon ring called my attention over my shirt, just as its glow began to fade, disappearing completely.
I shook my head, trying to clear it from what had just happened and let go, but I looked at my phone again, accessing the stolen picture from last night. The beating of my heart steadily returned to normal, calming with the sight of Evie sleeping in my arms while we laid on the sand. It felt kind of wrong to have taken it without her permission, but I needed that moment to remain with me after she was gone.
The multi-hued strands of her hair draped over my arm like a waterfall of molten gold, while her head rested on my chest. Her face was half hidden in my neck, and a small smile captured her delicious pink lips.
Holy hell. I wanted to taste her lips again, and again, and again.
Even then, it was the look of utter bliss in my expression while I held her that left me speechless. I didn’t think I had ever seen myself happy before. Setting the picture as my wallpaper so I could look at it all the time, I plunged the phone back in my pocket and returned to work.
I hadn’t planned for this.
I hadn’t expected it.
Still, I was going to hold on to that shimmering grain of sand for as long as I could.
